Sustainable, Closed-Loop, and a Unique Solution to the Fashion Industry: CIRCULOSE®

While trends in fashion are constantly changing, the transformation in the fashion industry lags far behind this pace. In addition to the issue of limited resource consumption, unused textile products pose a significant threat of becoming dysfunctional waste. Ultimately, the prevailing trend in production and consumption supports a wasteful industry.

We, at Özen, believe that it is possible to address these challenges by embracing a circular economy, investing in sustainable production, and recycling waste clothes into new materials. However, the current reality is that less than 1% of textile products are recycled due to the inability to recycle them at a sufficient quality.

Renewcell, a company committed to changing the global textile industry for a better future, aims to recycle the equivalent of more than 1.4 billion t-shirts annually by 2030 through its CIRCULOSE® product, which is produced entirely from textile waste. We, at Özen, take pride in supporting this goal.

WHAT IS CIRCULOSE®?

In essence, CIRCULOSE® is textile waste transformed into dissolving pulp. This new-generation material, produced with a single raw material component, is rich in cellulosic content. Since only textile waste and products are utilized as raw materials, it is manufactured without incorporating other cellulosic products like paperboard and wood. Its industrial-scale production caters to the global needs of fashion brands.

The only difference with CIRCULOSE®-based textiles is that they are made from textile waste instead of natural resources; new cotton, oil, or wood. Comprising 100% recycled fabrics, it is recyclable again and again, providing not only a high-quality appearance but also an exceptional wearing experience.

CIRCULOSE® PRODUCTION AND LOOP

1. End-of-life clothing and textile production scraps, made from cotton fabrics rich in cellulose are collected.

2. Clothes are shredded, eliminating accessories such as buttons and zippers, and their colors are removed, turning them into slurry. The process excludes contaminants like polyester, leaving behind cellulose, the biodegradable organic polymer found in cotton, trees, and most green plants on Earth.

3. The resulting slurry is dried to produce pure CIRCULOSE® sheets, packaged in bales, and delivered to fiber producers for conversion into virgin textile fiber.

4. Throughout the production process, different fibers are combined to create ropes, fabrics, and textile products. Brands design and manufacture new clothing using fibers made from CIRCULOSE®.

5. The continuity of the transformation is ensured, as new textile products, created with natural fibers and raw materials, are suitable for reentering the cycle.
